Smiths Falls police are warning the public of a high-risk violent sex offender who has been seen in the community. In a news release on Thursday, police said 35-year-old Aaron Gilpin was seen in local parks and was trespassed from a Tim Hortons. Police received a suspicious person call when Gilpin was spotted near the gazebo beside town hall. “Although no criminal offences occurred, it caused concern to the officers,” police said. Gilpin, police say, has an “extensive criminal record” dating back to the 2000s. Police say he has been convicted of a “brutal” child-related sexual assault, assault, weapons offences, disarming a police officer, breaking and entering and thefts. Gilpin is no longer on conditions of release and police say he poses a safety risk to the public. Police say Gilpin’s rights are guaranteed under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms Act. Reports regarding Gilpin can be made to the Smiths Falls Police Service at 613-283-0357. According to police, Gilpin should not be approached.
