The University of Windsor has opened a new accelerated pathway to medical school with a partnership. The university has joined forces with the American Canadian School of Medicine (ACSOM). It will allow qualified students to move into medical education after two years at UWindsor. They will then earn a UWindsor undergraduate degree and an ACSOM medical degree in six years. “This pathway significantly expands what is possible for University of Windsor students who aspire to careers in medicine,” said Dr. J.J. McMurtry, president and vice-chancellor. “Students can pursue the undergraduate field that interests them while gaining access to a clear, accelerated route that can lead to both a UWindsor degree and an MD.” The school created the pathway to give students more flexibility as they head into medical school. “The ACSOM in Dominica is the only not-for-profit medical school in the Caribbean and is determined to address the alarming shortage of physicians in Canada by creating pathways to medical school for highly qualified Canadian students,” said Dr. Andrew Padmos, ACSOM’s executive vice president for Canada. “Our partnership with the University of Windsor will be good for the Windsor region and good for Ontario.” Every year, there will be at least 50 conditional-admission positions to qualified students. The pathway will open this fall.
