A convicted sex offender considered a high-risk to reoffend is expected to live in Winnipeg after being released from prison. Michael Curtis Thomas, 33, was released from Stony Mountain Institution Thursday on statutory release. He was serving a 61-month sentence for aggravated sexual assault in connection with an incident in September 2020. “Although he has completed some sexual offender treatment in the past, he remains a high risk to re-offend in a sexually violent manner against all adult females,” Winnipeg police said in a news release. Thomas has previous convictions for assault with a weapon, weapon possession and numerous probation breaches. Upon release, Thomas is subject to several conditions until Jan. 22, 2027. He cannot consume drugs or alcohol, must report all relationships and friendships with women to his parole supervisor, and cannot associate with any person he knows is involved in criminal activity or substance abuse. He is also not allowed to contact any of his previous victims. Police said the information is being provided to enable the public to take suitable measures to protect themselves, but any vigilante activity towards Thomas will not be tolerated. Anyone with information on Thomas is asked to call the Manitoba Integrated High Risk Sex Offender Unit at 431-489-8056. You can also call the Winnipeg Police Service, your local RCMP detachment or Crime Stoppers.
