A Winnipeg man says he is lucky to be alive after nearly being struck by a speeding SUV being chased by police on Friday. Adam Orbanski told CTV News Sunday that he was walking home from work Friday afternoon on Broadway and just crossed Langside Street when the incident happened. “I could hear the siren, so I kind of stopped to look and see the car driving so fast towards me,” he said. “So then I was like, ‘Okay, maybe I should get out of the way and finish crossing the street,’ and I just kind of got out of the way just in time.” Orbanski said the SUV hit a black car that was travelling on Broadway, and police arrived shortly after. He said he saw two people arrested from the SUV following the crash. Winnipeg police shared few details about Friday’s incident, saying only a police pursuit and serious incident occurred. A section of Broadway was closed for several hours as police investigated. Orbanski said he saw security video of the crash later and saw that it happened just seconds after he finished crossing the street. “I was just maybe steps away from probably being killed,” he said. “If I didn’t cross the street there or move out of the way, the car probably would have hit me super fast. It was coming really fast.” A spokesperson for the Winnipeg Police Service said on Saturday that the incident is now being investigated by the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU). A request for comment from the IIU has not been returned.
