Police watchdog investigating crash involving stolen car

Manitoba’s police watchdog is investigating a Tuesday afternoon crash in Winnipeg’s St. John’s neighbourhood that sent four people to hospital.

According to the Independent Investigation Unit (IIU), the incident began around noon on Tuesday when the Winnipeg Police Service was notified of a stolen vehicle being driven down Mountain Avenue.

Shortly after, police found the car in the area of St. John’s Avenue and Main Street. Officers then lost sight of the vehicle and didn’t follow it due to safety reasons.

Around 12:10 p.m., the stolen vehicle was involved in a crash at the intersection of Mountain Avenue and Salter Street, with several police units responding to the crash.

The driver of the stolen car, who remains unidentified, fled the scene. The three passengers in the stolen vehicle, as well as the driver of the other car involved in the collision, were taken to the Health Sciences Centre.

The IIU is now investigating the incident as one of the passengers suffered serious injuries.
