Several communities in northern Manitoba are under a tornado warning as a severe thunderstorm sweeps through the region. As of 5:24 p.m., Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has placed Leaf Rapids, Nelson House, and Amisk Park Reserve under a tornado warning. According to the weather agency, a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located east of Leaf Rapids and moving east at 30 km/h. “This is a very dangerous and potentially life-threatening situation,” ECCC said in its warning, adding that the storm also poses risks of quarter-sized hail and wind gusts up to 90 km/h. The agency is urging residents to take cover immediately in a basement, interior room, or other sturdy shelter as the storm approaches. Those without access to shelter should lie in a low-lying area and shield their head from flying debris. People on the water are advised to return to shore and seek shelter if possible, or move away from the tornado’s path. If that’s not an option, ECCC recommends wearing a lifejacket, lying face down, and protecting the head. Tornado warnings are issued when a thunderstorm is producing, or is likely to produce, a tornado.
