A suspect wanted for the killing of a teenager in Shawinigan, Que., has been arrested by provincial police. The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) arrested Philippe Benoit, 41, near Lac Veillette, about 57 kilometres north of Shawinigan, at around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday. An SQ spokesperson said he resisted arrest and was later taken to hospital. Benoit is facing a first-degree murder charge in connection with the death of a 16-year-old, who was allegedly killed with a blunt object while being unlawfully confined. He was apprehended in the Lac-aux-Sables area, which is where police had been honing in on during their four-day search for the accused. On Sunday morning, police found the minor’s body at a home on 201e Avenue, leading them to believe it was a homicide and that a “bladed weapon” might have been used. Police did not release any further details. Philippe Benoit has a history of serious mental health issues, including schizophrenia and social phobia, Noovo Info reported. Police had urged anyone who spotted Benoit not to attempt to intervene, approach him, or contact him, but to call 911 immediately.
