The Winnipeg Jets have their new backup goaltender. The team announced Monday that they claimed Clay Stevenson off waivers from the Washington Capitals. The 27-year-old netminder is from Drayton Valley, Alta. and has played five games in the NHL since signing with Washington in 2022. In those five matchups he has a 3-2 record with a 2.60 goals-against average and .906 save percentage. He has also racked up 109 games in the AHL with the Hershey Bears, securing a 63-31-9 record, which featured nine shutouts, a 2.50 goals-against average and a .909 save percentage. Stevenson was also part of the team in Hershey that captured the Calder Cup in 2024. With Connor Hellebuyck not reporting to the team and being suspended by the Jets, Stuart Skinner has been thrust into the starter role after signing a two-year deal worth $3.75 million a season in the offseason. Stevenson currently has a cap hit of $850,000 and is set to become a free agent at the end of the season.
