A climber was knocked unconscious after being struck by a falling rock while descending Bear Mountain in the Haliburton Highlands. Police are now looking for hikers and climbers who may have witnessed the incident, which happened around 1:45 p.m. on Sunday. According to Haliburton Highlands OPP, two people had finished their climb and were making their way down the popular mountain when a rock fell and struck one of the climbers. The impact caused the climber to lose consciousness. Police say the remote location complicated rescue efforts. Bear Mountain is a water-access-only area, requiring emergency services to launch a boat carrying police and paramedics to the scene. Air ambulance later transported the climber to a Toronto-area trauma centre. Police have not released the climber’s identity or provided an update on their condition. Investigators believe other hikers and climbers were in the Bear Mountain area when the rockfall took place. Anyone who may have witnessed the event is asked to contact police.
