A mobile unit that offers free skin cancer screenings to patients is coming to Nova Scotia and New Brunswick this summer. The Mole Mobile, run by Melanoma Canada, is touring across Canada from May to October this year, making more than 130 stops in all 10 provinces. It will stop in Nova Scotia this weekend before heading to New Brunswick next weekend. Last year the Mole Mobile screened more than 8,000 people and identified 222 melanomas. “Visitors will also receive education on self-examinations and sun protection practices to help reduce their risk of melanoma and other skin cancers,” the Melanoma Canada website reads. Dr. Richard Langley, a dermatologist and professor of medicine with Dalhousie University, said skin cancer is the most common cancer in North America. “Skin cancer is different from other kinds of cancer,” he told CTV News Atlantic’s Todd Battis. “It writes its sign on the skin. The longer you leave, there’s a potential it can go deeper.” Langley noted the Mole Mobile has already found several hundred potential skin cancers so far this year.
