Halifax Lancers celebrating their 90th anniversary

Crystal Garrett visits the Halifax Lancers to find out about their big milestone and learn more about equine therapy.

The Halifax Lancers are marking 90 years with events happening throughout the year.

The non-profit riding school and equine therapy centre offers horseback riding programs for young people between the ages of six and 24 who live with intellectual or physical disabilities.

“We have 29 horses that live here and serve many people like our riders, starting at age six. We have about 200 riders who ride here every single week,” said Claire Halstead, Halifax Lancers director of development and engagement, in an interview with Your Morning Atlantic’s Crystal Garrett.

She says they have to be selective of the horses they bring into the facility and use in the programs.

“It’s very important that they are happy being here and they have to properly serve the programs from the riders to the therapy program,” she said.

The centre also hosts an equine therapy program with a mental health focus.

“We also offer programming that allows different community groups to come in and experience working with the horses on the ground and it’s from a mental health focus,” said Emily Jewer, co-ordinator of equine supported wellness.

“So they are learning how to communicate but also getting to experience the power of horses and how they can help us destress and help us with our mental health.”

Halstead said people can get details on the upcoming anniversary events on their social media.

“We have a lot going on this summer to celebrate and we are going to have a big celebration in October.”
