A Nova Scotia man who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in connection with a woman’s death has been sentenced to more than five years in federal custody. Douglas Andrew Smith was sentenced at Kentville Supreme Court on Tuesday, according to the Nova Scotia Public Prosecution Service. Along with the five-year, seven-month sentence, he received a lifetime firearms prohibition and a DNA order. Police previously said a 72-year-old woman was murdered at a Pleasant Street home in Kingsport on April 30, 2022. Smith turned himself in to police at an RCMP detachment in New Minas the next day. Last April, Smith, who was charged with second-degree murder, pleaded guilty to manslaughter.
