S&P/TSX composite falls nearly 400 points, U.S. stock markets also trade lower

TORONTO — Canada’s main stock index fell nearly 400 points on Tuesday, weighed down by weakness in the technology sector, while U.S. markets also lost ground.     

The S&P/TSX composite index was down 390.75 points at 36,123.05.

In New York, the Dow Jones industrial average was down 628.18 points at 52,786.07. The S&P 500 index was down 45.08 points at 7,673.52, while the Nasdaq composite was down 85.58 points at 26,421.41.   

The Canadian dollar traded for 72.55 cents US compared with 72.25 cents US on Friday.

The October crude oil contract was up US$1.55 at US$93.03 per barrel.  

The December gold contract was down US$37.60 at US$4,439.00 an ounce.
