A major outage in Winnipeg’s River Heights neighourhood is expected to continue into Wednesday. In a Tuesday afternoon update, Manitoba Hydro said about 1,500 customers are still without power following Sunday’s storm. All storm-related outages in the Westwood area were restored. According to the Crown corporation, crews are working to safely restore power, though outages will likely continue into Wednesday afternoon due to the scale of the damage. Hydro urges residents to not approach its crew members during the repairs and to stay at least 10 metres from downed power lines. Customers without power should check the overhead service mast on their property for damage and have it repaired by an electrician, if needed. How the city is helping To help those impacted by the outages, the City of Winnipeg has set up a reception centre at the Corydon Community Centre – River Heights Site. Residents can use the site to access phone charging stations, Wi-Fi, mental health supports, bottled water and snacks from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Tuesday. Members of the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic will also be going door to door to check on residents in affected areas, while the city’s Urban Forestry Branch helps to clear branches and trees. The city is also reminding residents to follow proper safety tips during an outage. This includes not using fuel-powered generators or appliances indoors, unplugging appliances and computer equipment and being careful when using candles.
