We kicked off the new work week on a very warm note. Calgary reported a high of 22 C at the airport this afternoon, 9 degrees above what’s normal for this time of year. The warming trend will continue Tuesday, when many places in southern Alberta will get into the mid-to-high 20s, with Calgary forecast to reach 20 C. Then, in true Alberta spring fashion, it all starts to break down on Tuesday evening as a stateside low-pressure system could produce some evening showers. The low intensifies by mid-week, which will drive the temperatures down in Calgary and bring clouds capable of scattered showers throughout the day. As the system continues its eastward journey into the central Prairies, models suggest it will stall and strengthen over Saskatchewan and Manitoba. While the worst of the conditions will be concentrated in those two provinces, Calgary will get some strong winds out of the northwest between 30 and 50 km/h, though gusts could exceed 65 km/h on Friday. It’s a little too far out to see what will happen next with this system, but right now, it seems like conditions and temperatures start to improve for the Calgary area starting on the weekend.
