The Calgary Fire Department (CFD) says as efforts to fully extinguish the blaze at Ecco Recycling continue, the flying of unauthorized drones over the site isn’t allowed. The fire at the Ecco Recycling facility remains under control. Fire suppression efforts are still focused on locating and extinguishing hot spots, reducing smoke impacts and preventing re-ignition. Firefighters are also using drone and thermal imaging technology to identify hot spots, monitor fire behaviour and support suppression planning. While the fire department is allowed to use drones, the general public isn’t, officials warned. “Drone activity near emergency operations creates significant safety risks and can interfere with response efforts,” said the CFD in a Friday news release. “Transport Canada prohibits drone use within the perimeter of a first responder emergency operation.” Those caught breaking the rules face fines up to $3,000. The fire at the private landfill began on Sept. 6 and was declared under control the next day, at which time it was released by to Ecco for continued monitoring and work to maintain the site. However, fire crews were called back on Sept. 8 to monitor conditions and work to again suppress the blaze. By Sept. 9, fires had ignited in several spots and began spreading throughout piles, resulting in heavy smoke. The fire continued, and on Sept. 11, the CFD issued a health advisory due to the smoke. By Sept. 15, the fire was again under control. It is still not fully extinguished.
