It’s been a fantastic start to the season for Cavalry FC, with three wins and two draws in their first five games. This weekend, they take on Vancouver FC, who are off to a 1-1-3 start. “They look like they have belief. They look like they have togetherness. So, it’s going to be a tough battle,” said Cavalry captain Sergio Camargo. “They’re not an easy team to break down, and they’re starting to find their goals, so it’s going to be a tough one for us away on the road.” While it’s a big game this weekend, Cavalry are also looking forward to their next test in the Canadian championship. With their win against Pacific, Cavalry advances to the quarter-finals, where they’ll once again face the Vancouver Whitecaps. “For me, it’s a cup competition. So, regardless if you’re playing Whitecaps or if we’re playing Pacific, you need to win, and you have to find whatever ways that are in your power and control to get the result,” said Cavalry defender Bradley Kamdem Fewo. “So, I think we’ll approach that game the same.” Cavalry has had success against the Whitecaps in the past. “I think they’re a team that we want to challenge ourselves against,” said Cavalry head coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. “So, it brings that kind of fire out in you, and it’s always nice to kill a giant, right?” Cavalry knows facing and beating an MLS squad is good for the league—and good for the team. “It’s just another measuring stick. It’s to see how far we’ve come,” Camargo said. “Obviously, we had success against them in Year 1, but having consistent success against MLS teams that you know have a much larger budget than you—it’s a good sign for the league when teams from all around the league are actually beating MLS teams.” The first leg will be played in Vancouver on July 8. Cavalry will return to Atco Field for the second leg on July 13.
