ConocoPhillips has confirmed it will reduce its Canadian workforce Tuesday but isn’t saying how many jobs will be eliminated. In a statement to CTV News, the energy company says the cuts will affect employees and contractors. “We routinely review our organization to align with our long-term strategy, operate safely and efficiently, and remain well-positioned for future opportunities,” said Dennis Nuss, the company’s director of media relations. An internal notice obtained by CTV News instructs Calgary employees to work from home Tuesday, when they will be notified virtually if their positions are affected. The notice also says employees at the company’s Surmont and Montney operations have been told notifications will be delivered by phone. ConocoPhillips has not disclosed how many workers will lose their jobs or how the reductions will be divided among its Alberta operations. CTV News has contacted the Alberta government to determine whether the company has filed a group termination notice under provincial employment standards legislation. Under Alberta law, employers planning to terminate 50 or more employees at a single location within a four-week period must notify the province. In ConocoPhillips’ last annual report, it listed eight per cent or 792 employees in its Canadian workforce.
