A bit of a cooler start to the first full week of May for Calgary. On Monday, the city managed to get to a high of 13 C, which is on the cooler side of the seasonal range. Winds also gusted into the high 50s throughout the afternoon out of the north, which played a significant role in the cooler temperatures. When we look at the upper air pattern, we see Calgary is positioned underneath the jet stream, which has a north-south tilt, allowing those strong winds to blow in today. There is also a large upper low-pressure system over parts of Ontario and the eastern Prairies right now that’s pulling a lot of air toward its centre. The strong pull of this low could cause some early-morning flurries to develop over Calgary and parts of the southern foothills. By the time Tuesday afternoon comes around, conditions should start to clear up, but temperatures will likely remain on the cooler side with another high of 13 C in store. A ridge of warm, high pressure will nudge into Alberta by mid-week, giving us a couple of days of highs in the low 20s and sunshine before some showers are modelled to arrive by the weekend.
