Lots of variable weather conditions will rattle Alberta on Tuesday, with areas to the east of Calgary experiencing the most hazardous conditions. Strong northerly winds and flurries were present in Calgary at around 4 a.m., but have since subsided, allowing for a relatively calm start to the day for the city. However, later this afternoon, those winds will pick up again out of the west at 30 to 50 km/h with a mainly cloudy sky. The high for Calgary today is 1 C, but it already happened during the 4 a.m. hour. There is potential for the temperature to return to 1 C during the morning hours but an incoming cold front will send us back to below freezing temperatures in the afternoon. Outside of Calgary, regions to the east along the Trans-Canada Highway are bracing for hazardous winter conditions with a yellow level winter storm warning issued by Environment and Climate Change Canada. This means short bursts of heavy rain showers or flurries are expected during the morning along with strong northwest winds gusting to 90 km/h. Icy surfaces may form quickly and be difficult to detect and anyone driving should take extra precautions on the roads. Looking ahead to the rest of the week, a modest ridge of high pressure will start to develop late Tuesday allowing for a stable Wednesday with a mix of sun and cloud and a high of 4 C. But the conditions will change dramatically late Wednesday when a cold air mass pushes in bringing evening flurries and an overnight low of -16 C! Temperatures will continue to be frigid for the rest of the work week with our next round of snow shaping up to arrive on Friday with a high of just -18 C.
