Alberta continues its hot weather trend, and the warmest temperatures haven’t even hit Calgary yet. Tuesday the city will hit a high of 30 C with a mainly sunny afternoon with a UV Index of seven. Winds will also pick up Tuesday out of the southwest at 30-50 km/h, which could move in some wildfire smoke from Montana and Idaho. Yellow-level heat warnings remain in place for regions south and east of Calgary like Lethbridge and Medicine Hat as they experience highs approaching the mid-thirties Tuesday. Calgary doesn’t quite meet the threshold for heat warning criteria as our overnight lows are cooler than 15 C on most days this week. Elsewhere in the province, it could be another day of wicked weather for Edmonton and regions north of the capital as models are anticipating powerful storm cells to move in a southwest to northeast direction Tuesday. Environment and Climate Change Canada’s storm outlook for Tuesday indicates these storm cells carry the potential for 100+ km/h winds, large hail, heavy rain and even the development of tornadoes. By mid-week, an upper ridge of high pressure will keep much of the province hot but stable heading into the long weekend. So, when is the hot weather going to end? A low-pressure system that is currently stalled over the pacific west coast starts to move inland on Saturday and will bring cooler air into Alberta during the back half of the long weekend, which will bring Calgary’s high temperatures back into the low twenties for a few days. Whether this system brings rain to the region appears low at this point.
