New Cavalry midfielder adding energy and attack to the team

Nathaniel Edwards is one of the new faces on Cavalry FC this season. The 23-year-old came to Calgary after a stint with MLS side Toronto FC and MLS next pro side Toronto FC II.

The midfielder has yet to hit the scoresheet this season, but believes that’s only a matter of time. In the meantime, he feels he brings more to the team than just goals and assists.

“I feel like my game isn’t revolved around just stats,” Edwards said.

“I feel like I’m a player that brings a lot of positive impact to the team whether it’s my work ethic. People may not be able to see I make a big difference, and I feel that’s a big part of my game.”

“But I do want to improve on the goals and assists for this year for sure.”

Has fit in

Cavalry signed Edwards through 2027 with a club option for 2028. Head Coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. calls him a hybrid because he can play so many different positions and has fit in nicely.

“I think he can play in all four corners,” Wheeldon Jr. said.

“He has this unbelievable sprint ability. So, if you’re going to bring the work you rely upon him and he creates space for others.”

Coaching staff has really helped

Edwards is adjusting to life in the Canadian Premier League and says he loves playing for Cavalry.

The transition was made easier because the coaching staff has been so good, he said, particularly in the little details.

“As players, we don’t even realize when we’re on the pitch because things are moving so fast. They’re really able to pick (things) apart and say this is a game changer right here and they’re clear on what that is.”

“When they tell you it’s easy to understand and then apply it on the pitch.”

Ready for the cold weather

We know it’s not going to be a very nice day for Cavalry’s game against York FC on Saturday afternoon, 3 p.m. kickoff at ATCO Field.

Wheeldon Jr. is hoping the fans will still bring the energy and he says his side will be ready for whatever mother nature brings.

“It’s just crazy weather regardless, so you’ve got to adapt as we’ve said. You know we’ve played in finals and first games in snow, so this is Canada and we’ve got to adapt to it.”
