Fire crews were called to the former Tuxedo Park school site after a blaze broke out in the basement of the building on Tuesday. At just after 6 a.m., the Calgary Fire Department (CFD) responded to the 2900 block of First Street N.E. Officials said light smoke could be seen coming from the boarded-up structure. Reports suggest the fire began in the basement, then spread to the second floor. The Tuxedo Park School was taken over by the City of Calgary in 2022, and work has been ongoing at the site ever since. The CFD says the current renovation work and retrofitting inside the building was a challenge to them when it came to battling the early morning fire. “Depending on how long it’s been vacant and boarded up, a lot of times it can be disrepair on the interior or if people have been in and out, altering anything, it can be very dangerous for our crews,” said Alex Kwan the CFD’s public information officer. “We’re going to make sure this fire is fully extinguished.” No one was found inside the building at the time of the fire. The cause is under investigation.
