One person is facing charges after a northern Alberta organisation reported half-a-million dollars missing. The Fort McMurray Heritage Society (FMHS) made the report in November 2024 and RCMP launched an investigation. After reviewing the FMHS financial records, administrative documentation, electronic evidence, and witness statements, investigators concluded that $800,000 had actually been taken. “While investigations of this nature can be lengthy and complex, it is essential that all available evidence is thoroughly examined to ensure a complete, impartial, and professional investigation,” Staff Sgt. Mike Robinson said in a news release. On Wednesday, a 44-year-old Fort McMurray woman was arrested and charged with theft over $5,000 and fraud over $5,000. She has been released from custody with a court date of Oct. 14 in Fort McMurray. FMHS previously operated the Fort McMurray Heritage Village, a living museum containing 17 historic buildings on a 6.6 acre site. The museum is currently closed, and according to a statement on the FMHS website, care and control of the site has been assumed by the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo.
