London Hydro says it has applied to the Ontario Energy Board to change electricity rates. The utility company says it is proposing a rate increase as it looks to upgrade and expand the city’s electricity system to meet growing demand. Population growth, new business connections and the increasing use of technologies such as electric vehicles, heat pumps and electric transit are all cited as reasons placing added demands on the grid. To maintain reliable service and prepare for future electricity needs, London Hydro has also proposed investments to replace aging infrastructure, increase system capacity and modernize the local grid. The utility has filed a cost-of-service application with the Ontario Energy Board outlining its proposed 2027 electricity rates and a five-year investment plan covering 2027 to 2031. If approved, the proposal would increase the bill for a typical residential customer by about $6.01 per month, with the new rates taking effect in May 2027.
