High school prom season typically runs from April to June, and in recent years social media has transformed the event into a viral phenomenon. Elaborate prom-posals, get ready with me’s (GRWM), and transition videos from all over the world are taking over social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram. Gen Z can be seen breaking away from “traditional” prom rules and using the special occasion to express themselves through fashion. CTV’s Lauren Stallone recalled how social media played a role in her prom. “We actually had a page dedicated to making sure that nobody had the same dress as you,” said Stallone. “Everyone sent in their dresses anonymously, so it didn’t ruin the surprise.” CTV Meteorologist Julie Atchison said she knows firsthand what this year’s prom season looks like as her son is preparing for his. “It’s become quite the experience,” said Atchison. “I am excited for him.” While CTV’s Carlyle Fiset didn’t attend his prom, he said today’s prom trends serve the same purpose that yearbooks did when he was in high school. “If you’re going to do it, lean into it, especially with social media,” said Fiset. “My time in high school just predated social media so the yearbook was like that for us.”
