The St. Thomas, Ont. golfer has won back-to-back provincial titles after capturing the Ontario Jr. Amateur, then following it up with a win at the Ontario Summer Games. “[Ontario Jr. Amateur] was a tough challenge,” said Lai. “The competition there is obviously really strong. I know a bunch of girls really well and we’re good friends and it was a good week. I feel like my game was pretty solid and I’m really glad to come out with the win.” Lai finished the championship at 1-over-par 289 (71-78-70-70), recording back-to-back rounds of 70 to earn a three-stroke victory at Maple City Country Club. She has this week off from tournament play before getting ready for the Canadian Jr. Amateur from Aug. 11–14, 2026 at TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley in Ontario. The 15-year-old reigning OFSAA champion won’t take any days off. She was at St. Thomas Golf and Country Club Wednesday practicing. “I’ll come to practice every day for at least three hours a day,” said Lai. “Some days I’ll try to get out, play 18 [holes], but otherwise I’ll have to work at the range on chipping and putting.” Lai has been travelling the U.S. and Ontario this summer picking up multiple top-five finishes. She hopes to perform well at the Canadian Jr. Girls and earn at spot at the Next Gen selection camp and turn that into a spot on Team Canada. While only 15, her run of success has her dreaming long term. “I’d like to play college golf in the States and get a scholarship hopefully, and then if I can turn pro, that’s the dream,” she said. Track and field A pair of London, Ont. athletes are competing at the World U20 Athletic Championships in Eugene, Oregon this week. Ryan Georgeson of London Legion Track and Field Club ran 1:52.20 to finish sixth in his heat in the 800m Wednesday afternoon.Jenna Tunks, 16, will compete Wednesday evening in the U20 Discus qualifier. A pair of St. Thomas track and field athletes are hoping to keep their run of podium finishes going this weekend at the Legion National Youth Track and Field Championships in Saskatchewan. Nash Okkersee and Xavier Sauer have been dominating the competition over the past two weeks in provincial meets, and now they are hoping to go national. Okkersee won the U16 gold medal in both the 1200m and the 2000m at both the Athletics Ontario and Ontario Summer Games events. Sauer won two silver medals in the 200m and the 100m at Athletics Ontario and then won gold in the 200m and silver in the 100m at the Ontario Summer Games Kayla Cross London’s Kayla Cross is out at the National Bank Open after an historic week. Monday, the 21-year-old shocked many at the tournament, upsetting Britain’s Katie Boulter 7-6 (3), 7-5 to earn her first WTA Masters 1000 victory. “I think today was a little bit less nervy than the other day,” Cross told TSN. “I think there’s a lot to improve on and I’m just trying to play a lot more matches at this level to get more used to it, get my body used to it, so I don’t wake up completely destroyed the next day. I think, just keep going and knowing that my level is there, so try not to do too much and play within myself.”
