Beach water quality testing for Huron and Perth County beaches indicate that some beaches in the area are not safe for swimming over the weekend. According to results from samples collected on August 13, Huron Perth Public Health does not recommend swimming at Port Blake Beach in Grand Bend, Goderich’s main beach, or Black’s Point beach. Other beaches in the area did not test high enough to warrant concern. Although lab results can be an indicator of beaches that are unsafe, just because a warning hasn’t been posted doesn’t mean that a beach is safe to swim in. Water testing is not done every day, so swimmers are advised not to swim in water that is turbid (so cloudy you can’t see your feet standing in waist deep water), or if there has been heavy rainfall in the last two days. E. coli can make it’s way into the Great Lakes through storm drains and sewers, septic systems, wild animals as well as other environmental contributors.
