“The Friendship Circle” has built a supportive community for those with disabilities, creating connections and providing activities year-round. Robbie Zunenshine has been an active member since its inception more than two decades ago. The 37-year-old says the non-profit organization has helped him thrive. “It’s hard for me to make friends because at a lot of other places they would judge people, whereas this place, it changes that, they learn not to judge,” Zunenshine said. Through community engagement, the organization is able to start and create a deeper understanding of what it’s like living with a disability. A group of fourth graders from E.C.S. were invited to interview some of the members of The Friendship Circle and learn more about their daily lives. “I got to see and talk to people about their daily lives and what was difficult and what it has meant to come to the friendship circle … it was really special," One of those students, Islay Grant Cherrett, told CTV News. Some of the activities the members can enjoy include drama, music and art, and as well as an employment program. “Delamie” is a chocolate and bakery project where people with diverse abilities can gain job experience and confidence. Zunenshine says that opportunity is invaluable. “They learn amazing social skills and they can take them with them,” he said. The organization relies on devoted volunteers like James Leon, who is also on the student’s president board. Leon says he’s inspired by everyone he’s met. “It opened a new world in my heart to try and give back more and spend some more volunteering time,” Leon said. Another volunteer, who now plays a vital role in fundraising, is Elise Golbert, who emphasized the value of the organization’s mission. “It’s changed our community for the better because every child deserves to know what it feels like to be loved and accepted,” Golbert said. On Oct. 18, the whole organization will gather for their annual “Walk 4Friendship” to raise $600,00, which helps fund their yearly programs. Golbert says she’s grateful for the entire organization. “I learned so much patience and love and acceptance, and I’ve learned to appreciate, you know, these beautiful, special souls.”
