The number of marriages being celebrated in Quebec remains stagnant, with the province recording nearly 23,000 marriages in 2025 — similar to the previous year. Approximately 25 per cent of men and 29 per cent of women are expected to marry at least once before reaching their 50s, according to the Institut de la statistique du Québec (ISQ), which released its annual report on marriages on Wednesday. The report notes that the 2025 data are consistent with those of the past 20 years, a period marked by a number of marriages that “overall, fluctuates little.” The ISQ report shows that Quebec women marry slightly earlier than men, with an average first marriage age of 31.7 years for women and 33.2 years for men. The number of heterosexual and same-sex marriages also remains stable, with 97 per cent of marriages between a man and a woman, and three per cent between two people of the same sex. In 35 per cent of cases, marriages were officiated by a religious minister, compared to 28 per cent officiated by a civil officiant. The total number of civil marriages accounted for nearly 65 per cent. The ISQ adds that the last three Saturdays in August and the first Saturday in September were the most popular days for weddings.
