Ontario Provincial Police have charged a 27-year-old driver from southern Ontario with driving 159 km/h on Highway 11-17. The incident took place Sept. 3 at 1:30 p.m. in the northwestern Ontario community of Red Rock when officers were conducting roadside radar enforcement. “The officer observed a westbound motor vehicle traveling at an excessive rate of speed,” police said in a news release Sept. 9. Police timed the vehicle travelling 159km/h in the posted 90km/h zone. The suspect from Alliston, Ont., was charged with stunt driving, contrary to section 172(1) of the Highway Traffic Act. The driver received a 30-day driver’s licence suspension and is scheduled to appear in Nipigon court at a later date. The vehicle, a 2010 black BMW, was impounded for 14 days. “The OPP remains committed to taking aggressive drivers off our roads through enforcement and public education,” police said. “If you suspect that someone is driving aggressively, it is important to call 911 to report it.”
