It’s a popular time for boating on Quebec waterways, and police are hoping to keep people safe. Montreal and Quebec provincial police will be stepping up patrols on the water this weekend as part of a coordinated safety operation. “We’re going to be on the water to prevent incidents,” said Sûreté du Québec spokesperson Kim Cormier. The goal is to stop any behaviour by recreational boaters that endangers their own safety and that of others. “In the majority of collisions, capsizings, and drownings, human behaviour is a major factor. Knowing your boat and familiarizing yourself with its equipment during boating activities can prevent unfortunate situations caused by inexperience,” the SQ said in a news release. Since the beginning of the year, there have been eight drownings in Quebec related with boat incidents, Cormier said. There have been 33 drownings in total so far. Throughout the weekend, officers will be enforcing regulations for boaters, both at the dock and on the water. Those breaking regulations, whether in a motorboat or paddling, can face fines. “The problematic behaviour that is observed on the water is speeding… boating with alcohol or drugs, not wearing their lifejacket and not being aware of their environment,” said Cormier. The SQ encourages boaters to make themselves familiar with the Transport Canada Safe Boating Guide. Its top five tips: The SQ also advises checking the weather forecast for the day before setting out, and planning the route, especially if you’re unfamiliar with the area. “We are asking people to take responsibility and wear their lifejackets if you’re going on the water. Plan your trip, verify the weather, and avoid taking drugs or alcohol,” said Cormier.
