The mercury has taken a nosedive over the last few weeks, and for drivers, that can only mean one thing: it’s time to book your tire change appointments. Quebecers planning to head out on the roads must have their winter tires on by Dec. 1. “Kill two birds with one stone and arrange for your tires to be fitted now so you can drive safely should the first snowfall arrive early, and avoid the rush at the garage,” insists Quebec’s Transport Ministry. Last year, Montreal received its first official snowfall of the season on Nov. 9. As such, the Ministry, along with the Société de l’assurance automobile du Québec (SAAQ) and CAA-Quebec, are urging drivers to start planning ahead by checking on the condition of their tires and booking appointments as soon as possible to avoid missing the deadline. “Your winter tires must be in good condition,” the Ministry states, noting that after six years, the rubber can be dried out or hardened. “If the tread depth is insufficient, road grip is reduced and performance is compromised.” According to Quebec law, all vehicles must have winter tires until March 15, inclusively. The only exceptions are heavy goods vehicles, utility vehicles and agricultural machinery. “Why have winter tires fitted? Because they are designed to remain flexible and safe in cold weather (below seven degress Celsius), which allows them to grip icy and snow-covered roads more effectively,” the Ministry explained. Drivers who do not adhere to the rules could face fines of between $200 and $300. Safe winter driving Here are some safety tips when it comes to driving in the winter, even if your tires are in good condition: Additionally, the Ministry encourages Quebecers to check the weather and plan their trips in advance. “Reduce your speed and anticipate the behaviour of other drivers,” it said. “Increase the distance between your vehicle and the one in front of you. At all times, drive responsibly and cautiously to protect your own life and that of others.”
