The Joyce Family Foundation is providing a $1.5 million bursary, with 12 first-year local students attending Algoma University in Sault Ste. Marie receiving $5,000 each per year. “This gift aligns closely with Algoma University’s mission to remove barriers to education, foster student success and contribute to the social and economic vitality of Northern Ontario,” the university said in a press release Monday. The foundation is best-known by its founder, Ronald V. Joyce, and his success with the Tim Hortons franchise across the country. “Ron Joyce believed that every young person deserves the chance to succeed,” said Rob MacIsaac, board chair of the Joyce Family Foundation “The foundation’s generosity represents a meaningful investment in the future of our students and our region,” said Dr. Kofi Campbell, president and vice-chancellor of Algoma University. Last year, Algoma University supported nearly 4,000 students and awarded more than $9 million in scholarships, bursaries and awards.
