One person is dead and a 19-year-old man has been charged with several offences following a crash that police say involved a stolen vehicle and impaired driving in Winnipeg’s Jefferson neighbourhood Sunday. According to Winnipeg police, a 2022 Honda CR-V was seen being driven north on McGregor Street at high speeds on Sunday at 7 a.m. Police say the CR-V went through a red light at Leila Avenue and collided with a 2023 Kia Seltos. Officers said the CR-V went airborne, hitting a traffic light, rolling over and hitting a tree, causing “catastrophic” damage to both vehicles. Police began providing emergency care before ambulances arrived. The CR-V had four people inside at the time of the crash. Two women, aged 20 and 22, were hospitalized in critical condition, while a 20-year-old man was transported to hospital in stable condition. The 20-year-old woman died from her injuries, while the 22-year-old woman remains in hospital with life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Kia, a 43-year-old man, was taken to hospital in stable condition. The driver of the CR-V, a 19-year-old man, was arrested at the scene and taken to hospital in stable condition for treatment of minor injuries, police said in a news release. Police say speed and impairment were factors in the crash and allege the CR-V was stolen. The driver has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime over $5,000, impaired operation of a vehicle and failing to comply with a release order. He was also arrested on three outstanding warrants, including one for aggravated assault. He was detained in custody and police said more charges are “anticipated” following consultation and authorization from the Provincial Crown. None of the charges have been proven in court.
