Sports for Kids Timmins is celebrating a major milestone after raising more than $1 million to help children from low-income families participate in organized sports programs across the city. The local charity, which has been supporting young athletes since 2002, continues to expand its reach by covering registration fees for a wide range of activities – including hockey, soccer, swimming, gymnastics, martial arts, cricket and more. Officials said the organization has now helped 3,650 children gain access to organized sports opportunities while partnering with more than 36 area organizations. “We’re proud of what this milestone represents,” said Colleen Landers, the charity’s president. “It signifies, number one, that the community and the businesses of Timmins have supported us. That’s where the funds come from and there’s a need.” “Sport has been proven to provide so many life skills in a child and so, we are here to help those in need, to ensure they have that opportunity,” added Landers. A visit to the organization’s website will inform visitors of all the sports and activities available through its voucher program.
