A 16-year-old boy riding an e-dirt bike was handed nearly $1,000 in fines after RCMP say he fled from an officer who tried to pull him over in Burnaby last week. Mounties said the teen was spotted speeding and doing wheelies on Government Road in North Burnaby on Friday. When police attempted to stop the rider, he allegedly cut into oncoming traffic and ran a stop sign before fleeing the area. Due to public safety concerns, the officer didn’t continue to follow him, RCMP said. However, the rider returned to the area about 25 minutes later. “This time his attempted flight was cut short,” Burnaby RCMP said in a news release Thursday. Mounties said the teen’s father was contacted and came to the scene. The teen was issued several violation tickets, including for failing to stop for police and driving without consideration. Police said the penalties from the incident will cost him $938. The teen could also face consequences when he applies for a driver’s licence. According to RCMP, outstanding fines must be paid before a licence can be issued, and the 16-year-old will likely have his Class 7 licence suspended. “E-dirt bikes are not permitted on our roads, no matter your age,” said Cpl. Mike Kalanj in the release. “Having your licence suspended and paying a fine is a much better outcome than the potential consequences police have recently seen at collisions involving these types of vehicles.”
