North Bay police have charged a Maple Ridge, B.C., man following a sexual assault in the city July 30. Police say the man approached the female victim – a stranger to her -- in the 900 block of McKeown Avenue. “After a brief encounter, (he) allegedly encouraged her to consume an alcoholic beverage before following her to her accommodation, restraining and sexually assaulting her,” police said in a news release Aug. 5. “The woman was later able to seek assistance, was transported to hospital for treatment, and subsequently reported the incident to police on July 31. Later that day, the accused was located and arrested without incident.” ‘Administering a noxious thing’ The 58-year-old suspect is charged with sexual assault and administering a noxious thing. He has been released on bail with a court date of Aug. 25. “Sexual violence has no place in our community. We recognize the courage it takes for survivors to come forward,” acting deputy chief Jeff Warner said in the news release. “We want everyone to know that we are committed to thoroughly investigating these crimes, holding offenders accountable, and ensuring survivors have access to support resources.” “Survivors deserve safety, support, and to be believed,” added Kathleen Jodouin, executive director of Victim Services of Nipissing District. “Victim Services of Nipissing District is here to listen without judgment, connect you to confidential resources and provide you with information. You are not alone, and you do not have to go through this by yourself.” Police said there is help available to anyone who has experienced sexual violence. “Your safety and well-being are the priority,” police said. “If you choose to report, officers will treat you with dignity, respect and compassion while conducting a thorough investigation. Support is available whether or not you decide to make a police report.”
