There are currently no reported cases of cyclosporiasis in Quebec linked to the ongoing outbreak associated with lettuce in several U.S. states. The parasitic infection spreads through contaminated food or water and causes watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, and fatigue. In a statement, Quebec’s Ministry of Health and Social Services said that since the beginning of the year, 223 cases have been reported to public health authorities, compared with 79 during the same period in 2025. The ministry added that the average number of cases reported during the same period between 2022 and 2025 was 70. “As in previous years, most cases reported in Quebec appear to be associated with travel-related exposure, primarily in Mexico.” The ministry noted that every year, a seasonal increase in cyclosporiasis cases is typically seen between early May and the end of August, adding that Quebec’s climate, like that of the rest of Canada, is less conducive to sustained environmental transmission of the parasite than tropical and subtropical regions. According to the government, Cyclospora is generally not found in food and has not been detected in drinking water in Quebec. In countries where the parasite is more common, an increase in cases is documented during the same period because of the rainy season. Increased rainfall can contaminate water sources and irrigated crops, contributing to the spread of Cyclospora. “As a result, the risk of contracting the illness through travel or by consuming contaminated imported produce is higher at this time of year,” the ministry said. During the seasonal increase in cases, regional public health authorities investigate reported cases to document potential exposures. “The Ministry of Health and Social Services continues to investigate the situation to identify any common sources among cases acquired in Quebec, including the possible consumption of contaminated imported fresh produce.” The ministry recommends the following measures to help reduce the risk of cyclosporiasis while travelling and in Quebec:
