Police in Wiikwemkoong on Manitoulin Island have arrested four people and seized drugs, cash and weapons following a traffic stop Aug. 11. Three people from Wiikwemkoong and one suspect from Pickering have been charged with numerous offences as a result. The traffic stop on Arthur Street in Manitowaning was the culmination of a drug investigation by the Wikwemikong Tribal Police Service. After stopping the vehicle, police “executed a search warrant at a residence on Hills Trail in Wiikwemkoong, with help from the Ontario Provincial Police community street crime unit and the UCCM canine unit. “The execution of the search warrant resulted in the arrest of a fifth individual,” police said. “Officers also seized a quantity of cocaine, crystal methamphetamine and numerous replica handguns.” Combating drug-related crime Police chief Ron Gignac said the arrests reflect their commitment to fighting the drug trade. “This investigation reflects our ongoing commitment to reducing drug-related crime and enhancing public safety in Wiikwemkoong through proactive, intelligence-led policing and strong partnerships with neighbouring police services,” Gignac said in a news release. “Addressing drug trafficking requires both targeted enforcement and collaboration with community partners to reduce harm and improve safety outcomes.” Charged are a 21-year-old from Pickering and suspects aged 49, 54 and 55 from Wiikwemkoong, with drug trafficking and weapons offences.
