Police in Sault Ste. Marie, Ont., are investigating the city’s third homicide of the year after a person discovered with life-threatening injuries on Poplar Avenue over the weekend has died. The investigation began on Saturday evening when police responded to a 911 call in the 100 block of Poplar Avenue. “Officers did respond. They found somebody suffering life-threatening injuries and as you mentioned, they later succumbed to those injuries,” said Lincoln Louttit, a spokesperson for the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service. Scene secured for investigation The area, a residential neighbourhood, was cordoned off with police tape for much of Sunday as officers conducted their investigation. The scene has since been lifted. Police would not disclose the nature of the victim’s injuries or the specific location where they were found by first responders. Authorities did confirm to CTV News that the victim’s next of kin have been notified. Police seek public assistance With few details available in the early stages of the investigation, authorities are appealing to the public for help. “We’ve put out a couple of a piece of information and we are urging anybody that lives in the area or may have frequented the area on Saturday evening to, you know, obviously check, any video surveillance they may have or dash cam or if they think they heard something, obviously to please contact us so detectives can follow up those leads,” Louttit said. Police officials stated that to protect the integrity of the investigation, no further details on the case can be released at this time, but they hope to share more information with the public in the coming days.
