A veteran Vancouver police officer who also heads up a non-profit that aims to steer youth away from a life of crime has been charged with nine offences. Kal Dosanjh was charged Thursday with four counts of theft over $5,000, four counts of fraud over $5,000 and one count of breach of trust by a public officer. The offences date from 2017, according to court records. Plainclothes and uniformed police were at Dosanjh’s home throughout the day Thursday and could be seen removing a number of evidence boxes from the residence. Dosanjh’s charity, Kids Play Foundation, describes its mandate as “working towards keeping kids away from the lifestyle of drugs, gangs, and violence.” The Vancouver Police Department declined to comment on the charges or on Dosanjh’s duty status but has scheduled a news conference for Friday. Chief Const. Steve Rai will be speaking alongside Supt. Mike Ritchie to “announce charges in a 2.5-year covert investigation.” A law firm identifying itself as representing Dosanjh sent a statement to CTV News. “Mr. Dosanjh has committed no crime and is innocent of any wrongdoing. An arrest, or a report that an arrest has occurred, is not evidence of guilt, misconduct, or criminal responsibility,” the statement from Alliance Lawyers Oberoi Haban Malli LLP said. “We ask that Mr. Dosanjh’s legal rights and privacy, as well as the privacy and well-being of his family, be respected, and that the integrity of any ongoing process be preserved.”
