The Greater Sudbury Police Service says it’s investigating two unrelated serious collisions Tuesday evening — one that claimed the life of a 75-year-old man and another that left a pedestrian in critical condition. Two vehicle crash Police said in a news release Wednesday that officers were dispatched to a crash on Elm Street between the Big Nickel Mine Road on-ramp and the Lasalle Extension off-ramp at around 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 13. Upon arrival, emergency responders located one of the drivers, a 75-year-old man who had sustained serious, life-threatening injuries. He was transported to hospital by Greater Sudbury Paramedic Services, where he succumbed to his injuries. “Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends,” police said in the release. “His name will not be released out of respect for his family’s wishes.” Based on the initial investigation, police said officers believe the vehicle being driven by the 75-year-old man crossed the centre line and was struck by another vehicle. Police said the driver of that vehicle was not injured. The roadway was closed until shortly before 3 a.m. on Wednesday, according to the police service’s social media. “The investigation into the collision is ongoing,” police said. Another collision A second collision, reported around 7:15 p.m., involved a pedestrian on Notre Dame Avenue between Morin Avenue and Cambrian Heights Drive. Officers said that upon arrival at this location, they located the pedestrian, a 48-year-old man, and began life-saving measures. “The individual was transported to hospital with serious, life-threatening injuries and remains in critical condition,” police said. Based on the initial investigation, police said officers have determined the pedestrian was not using a marked crosswalk when attempting to cross the road and was struck by the vehicle in the northbound lane. Police said on social media that the roadway was closed until about 5 a.m. on Wednesday. “Members of the Integrated Traffic Safety Unit are investigating,” said police. Anyone with information about, or who witnessed, either collision is asked to call police at 705-675-9171 or contact Crime Stoppers anonymously.
