Two new wildfires reported in Sudbury region

Ontario Forest Fires has reported two new wildland fires in the northeast region, bringing the total number of active fires in the area to 44.

In its latest update Sunday evening, Ontario Forest Fires reported two new wildland fires in the northeast region, bringing the total number of fires in the area to 44.

The new fires include Sudbury 47, which is 0.1 of a hectare and located 0.45 of a kilometre east of Chiniguchi Lake and 1.3 kilometres northwest of Telephone Lake. The fire is being held.

Sudbury 48 is 0.1 of a hectare and located 0.45 of a kilometre northwest of Moose Lake and 0.6 of a kilometre southeast of Gem Lake. The fire is being held.

Of the 44 active wildland fires in the northeast region, one is not under control, four are being held, one is under control and 38 are being observed.

The interactive fire map provides the forest fire danger rating as calculated by more than 130 weather stations across Ontario’s fire region.

In the northwest, three new fires were reported Sunday evening, including two that are out of control: Thunder Bay 78, located near Argon Lake, 11 kilometres southwest of Highway 17. The 0.1-hectare fire is not under control.

Fort Frances 63 is located near Kendall Lake and approximately 1.5 kilometres west of Scotch Lake. The 0.2-hectare fire is not under control.

As of Sunday evening, there are 112 active wildland fires in the northwest region. Of those fires, 12 are not under control, seven are being held, six are under control 87 are being observed.

Thunder Bay 36 out of control

Crews are still dealing with Thunder Bay 36, a 301,240-hectare fire that remains out of control.

Considerable resources have been deployed to fight the fire, including 26 wildland firefighting crews from Ontario, Alberta, Nova Scotia, and Manitoba, two 20-person crews of wildland firefighters from Mexico, heavy equipment operators, pilots and overhead staff from Ontario and Québec.

There is also an incident management team assigned to the Rinker Lake Complex, as well as 15 helicopters.

“Firefighting crews are patrolling for and extinguishing hotspots, consolidating hose lines, installing and maintaining values protection equipment and constructing helipads to allow for mobilization of equipment and gain access to more fire area,” Ontario Forest Fires said.

“Bucketing helicopter operations are ongoing where required.”
