Cornwall is one of many municipalities in eastern Ontario to have a new mayor. Sarah Good, who served as a city councillor for the past four years, says she is excited to take on the new role. “There’s this incredible excitement throughout the community,” she told CTV News Ottawa. Good defeated one-term mayor Justin Towndale with 7,545 votes against his 4,559, according to the City of Cornwall. “It was a chaotic campaign, I’ll say a bit of a roller coaster. And so people have really commended me on my perseverance, and they’re really excited to see what’s coming,” she said. Good says her priority will be the city’s budget. Like many municipalities, Cornwall is facing increasing costs and infrastructure backlogs. “Trying to manage that, be creative. How can we generate some more revenue, encourage development and just make sure that we’re lessening the burden on our taxpayers?” Good says while campaigning, there were many conversations from voters around affordability. “Cornwall is not unique in that sense. Affordability, housing top of the list and of course, taxes,” she said. Good will be sworn in to her position in mid-November. Kingston, Brockville and Pembroke are among the other eastern Ontario municipalities that elected a new mayor on last Monday’s municipal election.
