A Saskatchewan woman is hoping to name a room of the new Weyburn Humane Society after Tanya Myers, who died in a shooting last year just outside the city. The humane society is offering sponsorship packages to aid in the construction of its new building on East Avenue. Those packages include naming portions of the building after the project’s donors. As tribute to Myers, Jaime Wawro has launched a fundraiser to name one of the building’s cat rooms after the late Weyburn woman. “She just didn’t like cats, she loved cats,” Wawro told CTV News. Myers was an animal enthusiast. She saved multiple cats who were left near her property, nursing them back to health and then taking them to the Humane Society. On Sept. 12, 2025, Myers and a friend were approaching Weyburn on Highway 39 when their vehicle was struck by a bullet. Myers was fatally hit. At around the same time, another vehicle on the road was struck by a bullet. Wawro was in this vehicle. “It’s been a lot. I am just one small piece of the puzzle, and I really want to make sure I do my part to help her be remembered,” said Wawro. The new Weyburn Humane Society building is scheduled to open at the end of September. As an avid cat lover, Myers was also known to have lived with up to nine cats at one time. “[Tanya] would be so excited about this building. I wish she could see it, because she would be so excited for the cats,” said Sandy Johnson, a board member of the Weyburn Humane Society. Wawro is looking to raise $30,000 — enough to rename one of the cat rooms after Myers. The GoFundMe has already raised over $2,200 as of Monday evening. There is no deadline for Wawro, but she hopes to reach the mark in the next few weeks in alignment with Myers’ birthday, and her untimely death. “I really wanted to find a way to honour her memory, honour how she lived her life,” said Wawro.
