Regina police were stationed at the Regina City Jamia Masjid (RCJM) on Friday as the mosque resumed its 1 p.m. call to prayer broadcast through the neighbourhood. This followed a round of public consultation, where over 200 people offered their opinion, drawing mixed feedback. Supporters and opponents of the practice were gathered outside the building for the broadcast, which didn’t seem audible beyond the street corner. One man stood outside the mosque reciting the Lord’s Prayer. Later, he met with a member of the mosque in an alley behind the building, where the two discussed their respective faiths. The mosque requires a permit from the City of Regina under the Noise Abatement Bylaw for each call to prayer. It has submitted four permit applications so far but has not indicated what its plans are beyond those applications. M. Anisur Rahaman of the RCJM, said he was attending Friday prayers and would be available to discuss the matter the following week.
