Staff at Saskatchewan Penitentiary in Prince Albert seized nearly $149,000 worth of contraband and unauthorized items during three separate incidents this month. Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) says staff intercepted packages containing prohibited items at the federal prison on Aug. 20, 21 and 24. Items seized included methamphetamine, cocaine, THC concentrate, tobacco, a cellphone and charger, a USB card reader and rolling papers. The estimated institutional value of the contraband was $148,840. CSC says it uses a number of tools to prevent drugs and other contraband from entering its institutions, including ion scanners and drug-detector dogs used to search buildings, property, inmates and visitors. The agency says it is increasing efforts to prevent contraband from entering federal correctional facilities and continues to work with police to target those who attempt to introduce prohibited items into institutions.
