The Greater Montreal area is under a severe thunderstorm watch for Thursday afternoon and evening, according to Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC). “Conditions will be favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain,” the agency notes. “Severe thunderstorms may produce tornadoes.” ECCC is also asking people to avoid nautical activities, which may be hazardous due to sudden, severe wind gusts over bodies of water. “Damage to roofs, fences, branches or soft shelters is possible,” it adds. Heavy rain can cause flash flooding and significantly reduce visibility. The impact level is considered moderate, with a high forecast confidence.
