A woman was struck and killed by a driver while crossing the street near downtown Vancouver early Sunday morning, according to police. The Vancouver Police Department says the 45-year-old was in a marked crosswalk at Main Street and National Avenue just after midnight when she was struck by a southbound SUV and thrown approximately 30 metres. “It is not yet clear if she was crossing with a walk signal at the time,” a statement from police issued Tuesday reads. Paramedics, firefighters and police responded and attempted to resuscitate the woman but she was pronounced dead just before 1 a.m. Police say the driver is co-operating with the investigation and alcohol and drugs are not believed to be factors in the crash. The department said they have not yet recommended charges. “It was dark and raining heavily at the time. Police are once again calling for additional caution on the roads this season as visibility becomes more challenging for both pedestrians and drivers,” the statement continues. Earlier last week, a seven-year-old girl was hit by a car in East Vancouver, at East Pender Street and Victoria Drive. The vehicle was travelling about 20 km/h and the child suffered minor injuries, according to police. In the wake of these two incidents, police are reminding drivers to stay vigilant as mornings and evenings get darker.
